My local paper is beginning to cover the candidates for state representative in Carroll County. This past week saw a story about former Rep. Norman Tregenza of Madison, who resigned during the DJ Bettencourt ethics scandal, because he’d moved out of his district. Norm is running for office again, in the new floterial district, where he’ll be going up against former Rep. Ed Butler.

Conway Daily Sun.

Norm filed legislation to end the US participation in the UN, and to return us to the gold standard. What he did for his actual constituents is unclear. Be that as it may, he wants another chance.

“There are three key concerns on the minds of most people right now in the Mount Washington Valley,” said Tregenza. “Those concerns are jobs, liberty and roads.”

If elected Tregenza wants to help repeal laws and taxes that are burdensome to businesses. Number one on that list is to gradually reduce the state’s rooms and meals tax, which stands at 9 percent. How the state would make up for the initial loss of revenue would have to be determined separately from the bill to reduce the tax. He said in the long term the tax cut would actually increase revenue because reducing the tax would encourage more patronage of New Hampshire hotels and restaurants.

Apparently this is also his job creation plan, since after this he goes on at length about abolishing sobriety checkpoints.

Tregenza says maintaining the roads is very important. He would try to direct funding to improve various local roads including East Conway Road, Route 113 and Route 153.

It’s unfortunate that the reporter didn’t ask him where that funding was coming from, given how hard he and his fellow Teabaglitarians worked on eliminating revenue sources.

In addition to being a Ron Paul supporter, Norm is also a member of the John Birch Society.  He recently had a showing of a JBS movie: Agenda 21, at the Majestic Theater in Conway Village. In his email (I’m on his email list for some reason) he mentioned that the new JBS Coordinator and Agenda 21 expert, Leif Parsells would be on hand to answer questions.

I used the google, and discovered that Mr. Parsells was actually fired from a conservative Maine paper, when it was discovered that he was something of a white supremacist.

This week also brought a letter from Rep. Frank McCarthy of Conway, desperately hoping for another term.

Read the letter. Frank’s a guano spigot that’s stuck in the open position – and he takes great pride in cutting fees, screwing unions, and schools.

There is nothing, not a single thing these people have done, or intend to do that involves goals or plans, or progress for the state’s future. It’s just a pinched, Dickensian Catch 22  view where the state can’t do anything, because there isn’t enough money – and they’re going to make sure there isn’t.

Those of you who are older will remember when the future was something we talked a lot about. In the 60’s and 70’s the future was a big deal. We designed houses and furniture that might fit into our space age future. It was an exciting time.

We don’t talk about the future any more. The Republican Party is increasingly regressive, and never mentions the future. If they did they might have to stop pretending that climate change isn’t real, and that the United States is an empire in decline. Other countries have better internet capabilities and much higher speeds. Other countries are heavily investing on infrastructure and high speed rail. We’re heavily investing in global military supremacy, at the cost of letting everything else go.

These two are perfect candidates for the Regressive Party.
